Brothers Autism Social Enterprise CIC (BASE) was established in June 2023 by David McLaughlin (Founder & Director). David has over 20 years’ experience supporting autistic and neurodivergent individuals, alongside a strong academic background including a BSc in Psychology, MA in Early Childhood Development, PgDip in Autism Spectrum Disorders, and he is currently a PhD candidate specialising in Autism & Bereavement. BASE is a grassroots, values-led Community Interest Company delivering autism-informed support through structured, inclusive and sensory-considerate community interventions for older teens and adults.
BASE has been intentionally designed and developed around two key psychological foundations that strongly influence David’s practice: Lev Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (including scaffolding and guided growth), and John Bowlby’s Secure Attachment theory, which underpins BASE’s focus on safety, trust, belonging and emotional regulation. David also brings extensive professional experience delivering external autism and neurodiversity training, supporting organisations to improve understanding, confidence and real-world best practice in working with autistic and neurodivergent people (including sensory processing, communication, behaviour, and wellbeing).

David was born in Belfast and spent most of his life living there, which is why BASE was originally established within the Greater Belfast area. Having recently moved to Downpatrick, BASE has expanded its delivery reach across the wider local area and opened its first dedicated premises in Downpatrick town centre on English Street, within the Cathedral area. This base provides a stable, accessible and welcoming space where autistic and neurodivergent people can build confidence, connection, belonging and positive life direction.
